Baby I Love You by The Ramones occupies a very special place in my record collection as it was the song my wife Lorraine and I chose for Lorraine to walk down the aisle to at our wedding in 2004. I am a huge fan of the original version of Baby I Love You by the Ronettes, own an original 1964 copy, and may well write about this song in the future but for the purposes of this post I’m going to concentrate on the Ramones version.
Lorraine and I had decided during the organisation of our upcoming nuptials that music would play an integral part of our big day and we spent many an hour planning the particular song we would have playing at particular times during the day. However, we were struggling to decide on which song would be, in effect, the most important song of the day : Which song would provide the musical backdrop to Lorraine walking up the aisle?

So how did we come to this particular choice? It was a Sunday morning, probably 3 or 4 weeks before the actual big day and we had been struggling to decide for quite a while. We were determined Lorraine would not be walking up the aisle to the traditional Bridal March, but couldn’t decide on a suitable alternative. At this point Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs show came over the car radio and up popped this song. I can remember a massive bulb going off in my head, instantly knowing this was the ideal song.
Upon my arrival home from buying the Sunday papers I can remember rushing inside to tell Lorraine I had found the perfect song. Her initial cynicism soon subsided as I explained to her that in musical decisions my judgement was near perfect and she should get used to me being the man of the house and she should get used to the idea of meekly accepting all of my decisions in the future.
That last paragraph doesn’t in any way reflect what actually happened or has since happened, but it is how my memory chooses to recount that event! She did like the song though.
But there was a much bigger problem : Neither of us owned a copy of it and neither did anyone we knew. After much deliberation we decided to buy a copy from iTunes from an internet, played it on our big day and the song has came to occupy a special place in our memories of our wedding.
